Introduction

This year, KSG went with us, and somewhat last minute (3-odd weeks before departure day) my mother called and expressed the desire to stay with us as well. This is shaping up as being possibly the best Jasper trip ever.

We stayed in a different cabin than before this time, "Big Bear Cabins" in Cabin 1 (link). As much as we are sentimental about always staying in Dogwood Springs, we needed the extra room this year, and in fact even last year when we upgraded to #18 which had more room, the kitchen STILL felt cramped. We really needed the extra room this year, especially for making full use of a real kitchen, and may well stay here from now on while visiting Dogwood on a day pass for the kids to enjoy the slide on the pool.

I actually took the same camera gear and computer gear as last year (most of it was the same anyway). It seems I've "settled" in both departments. The main exception is my wife's DSLR, she had a Nikon D3100 DSLR, which in fact was what she had in 2012 and 2013 (different one).

Cameras
Sony A5000/A6000 with 16-50 PZ (for me)
Nikon D3100 kit (for my wife)

Phone/GPS
ZTE Zmax 2 on Cricket/AT&T--5.5" screen, Android 5.1 (many phones were on Android 6 by now)

I brought the same 2 laptops I had bought last year (one of which I had purchased on the way there). The "best" one, which had Windows 8.1, I'd updated it to Windows 10. I also bought along a 3rd tiny "micro" laptop (Asus X205T 11.6" 1366x768 LCD with Windows 8.1) I'd bought between this year's trip and the last one. For storage, I bought 2 new 64G flash drives (along with the old one and other smaller ones), and the 500G Western Digital "ultra" portable hard drive I'd gotten at Best Buy about a year ago (for only $25 and change) but never fully utilized, I dumped all of my MP3s on it as well, since I had recently given them to KSG and figured maybe we'd possibly be fooling around with those on the trip during "rest" time.

Spots Visited This Year (UNDER CONSTRUCTION!!!)

GPS Coordinates
Years Visited
Description
Hardee's Prescott ARK 33.8281, -93.39442 (link) 3 Found this spot ~ 2 years ago, ate breakfast there on departure day.
Dogwood Springs Cabin 36.02014, -93.17570 (link) 1,2,3 The cabin where we've stayed every year.
Bradley Park (p 48) 36.00387, -93.19468 (link) 1,2,3 Visited all 3 years, a small city-park based swimming area that's about 2 miles from the cabin, great for "quick dips" on the way to somewhere else or when you're tired and settling in for the night.
Ponca Access Bridge (p 68) 36.02103, -93.354986 (link) 1,2,3 Visited every year. Found accidentally by wife in 2012 after leaving Lost Valley (although it was at the website and in the book), a perennial favorite.
Pruitt (Lower p 80) 36.06139, -93.13888 (link) 1,2,3 Visited all 3 years, found at swimmingholes.org/ar.html, one of the "foundation" spots that inspired Jasper as a visit spot to start with. You park here and walk down the "side" path (going underneath the bridge over ARK 7) to go to the beach area.
Pruitt (Lower p 80, Alternate Access) 36.062024, -93.137267 (link) 1 Same spot, but the alternate more difficult location that accesses this from the top of the bluffs, good if you want to jump from up-high
Pruitt (Upper) 36.06139, -93.13888 (link) 1,2,3 Same parking spot as "Lower," this is the closer spot with less beach-like area.
Sharon K's Cafe 36.005913, -93.186002 (link) 1,3 A "mom & pop" type of cafe located near where Jasper starts coming in from Russellville, visited in 2012 & 2015.
Hasty Campground (p 84) 36.0083, -93.0814 (link) 3 NEW SPOT, found in book.
Blue Hole (p 86) 35.99478, -93.04205 (link) 1,3 Visited in 2012 & 2015, informed of this spot via cabin owners and turn-by-turn directions. It's listed in the book on p 86 as "Troy Eddings."
Carver 35.98419, -93.04162 (link) 1,3 Found "on the fly" from visiting Blue Hole, visited in 2012 & 2015
Taco Loco 36.012621, -93.181022 (link) 3 NEW SPOT, located in same parking lot as Subway, high prices and small portions.
Alum Cove 35.8576, -93.2346 (link) 3 NEW SPOT, informed of by cabin owners, decent alternative to Lost Valley if it's closed (it was this year)
Whiteley Hole (p 64) 35.94694, -93.40138 (link) 3 NEW SPOT, found in book.
Pearly Springs Hole (p 66) 36.00388, -93.37 (link) 3 NEW SPOT, found in book.
Subway 36.012621, -93.181022 (link) 1,2,3 One of the few "mainstream" eating spots in the area.
Ozark Campground 36.06500, -93.15917 (link) 1,3 One of the "foundation" spots found in 2012 in swimmingholes.org/ar.html that was a basis for starting up Jasper trips back in 2012. Visited in 2012 & 2015.
Sam's Throne 35.87917, -93.04472 (link) 1,3 Informed of this spot by cabin owners in 2012, went that year and this year.
Shine Eye (p 104) 35.988, -92.7344 (link) 3 NEW SPOT, found in book in 2015.
Mexican Restaurant (Los Aztecas) 35.90869,-92.66197 (link) 3 NEW SPOT, found "on the fly" while visiting Shine Eye ~ 1 hr away eastward from cabin in 2015.
Tyler Bend (p 102) 35.9892, -92.7675 (link) 3 NEW SPOT, found in book p 102.
Grinder's Ferry 35.98493,-92.74401 (link) 3 NEW SPOT found "on the fly" visiting Shine Eye & Tyler Bend. That's the parking spot, the spot I jumped in was at 35.9859, -92.74293 (link)
Fort Douglas Bridge 123 (p 36) 35.6769, -93.235 (link) 3 NEW SPOT found in book p 36. A suitable "on the way home" spot (thus also suitable as a "on the way in" spot).

This year, not sure how wise this is, but I made a 2nd "custom map" with fewer of the spots listed, figuring it might be less confusing for KSG etc to view. (That would mean any new spots added would have to be added in 2 places, it may not have been my best idea?)

2015: Making Tables And In-Page Links Within a Page in Blogspot

Tables in Blogspot
http://blogknowhow.blogspot.com/2011/01/how-add-table-blogger-blogspot-post.html
http://www.bloggersentral.com/2012/11/create-table-in-blogger-post.html

http://www.textfixer.com/html/html-table-generator.php
http://www.tablesgenerator.com/html_tables#

NOTE: it is VERY important to note that while editing the Blogspot post in "WYSIWYG" mode, all of the formatting and such with respect to a table generated with an external tool with its HTML copied pasted is not shown. Only formatting applied in the WYSIWYG editing view shows up in the WYSIWYG editing view. However, the effects are still there, you will see the effects if you "preview" the page (or have a separate tab open of the posting and press F5 to refresh as you type).

For the table of places visited in Jasper ARK in 2015, I initially used the textfinder and generated a "template" table, pasted the HTML in a blank "scratchpad" blogspot new post in HTML view, and then typed (or copied-pasted) the content in the "placeholder" spots in the "WYSIWYG" editing mode.

For making this table again (what you now see), and for making the in-page navigator (where I needed more flexibility with specifying row width and overall table width), I used the tablesgenerator page (also shown on the PBase page as "HTML Table Maker") and, again, pasted the code in a new blank "scratchpad" blogspot page, then copying-pasting this code into the destination page (the Jasper page). Again, in WYSIWYG mode, the table doesn't look right, it looks like all the formatting etc has been lost, but when you "preview" it (or, again, save and go to a tab with the page's URL open and refresh it via F5), it shows as being properly rendered.

Links Within Page in Blogspot

from http://blogtimenow.com/how-to/create-anchor-links-wordpress-blogger-jump-links/

Within a given H3 header text, in the HTML, add something like id=”page1” within the H3 bracket to create the SPOT. (If it's a plain paragraph, create a separate anchor tag which will look like <a id=”page1”></a>

Then, to create the LINK to this SPOT, use the link generator in WYSIWYG mode (don't forgot to un-check "new window"), copy-paste the URL to this page with #page1 added to it at the end.

After not making it to Jasper in 2014 due to the major family issue, we made it back for "J3" as I called it for 2015.

We eagerly planned for this well in advance. I picked July 31-August 5th as we both were paid that week. We also picked cabin #18 instead of the usual #13-14 as we had in the past, I desired to have a full-blown kitchen for making food more easily, and with a place to sit down at a table, versus the very crowded setup we had in #13-14.

Much as before (especially in 2012, "J1" as it were), I had a packing list generated well in advance, and packed generously, right down to the expected ingredients for dishes I figured on making (hamburger steak & gravy, pot roast).

Even more than in 2013, I made somewhat extensive use of the book "Swimming Holes of the Ozarks," a book I purchased between 2012 & 2013 but lost after 2013, I repurchased it this year (from here). If you see a location mentioned with something like "p82" or such beside it, this means that location was found in that book on that page. (Some, like Ponca or Pruitt, are found in the book, but as I knew about them before getting the book, I don't necessarily mention the page number of the book's entry for those spots.)

I went armed with the following camera, computer, smartphone & GPS equipment:

Camera
  • Sony A5000 with 16-50PZ
  • Sony A6000 with 18-55mm (I later started using the 16-50PZ on this as well)
  • Pentax K-x kit for the wife
Phone/GPS
  • ZTE Maven AT&T/Cricket Smartphone, 4.5" screen, Android 5.1
  • Garmin Nuvi 40 GPS
I took a new Dell Windows 8.1 laptop which I had just acquired about 2-3 months earlier (for only $80). My previous Dell 8600 suffered a broken screen, but I bought another cheap Dell for backup in case my wife needed one (it was nevr used).

Unlike previous years, my phone worked rather well in the Jasper area. I had switched to Cricket, which is AT&T Prepaid, and AT&T and Verizon are said to work well there. In fact, my phone worked very well most places (although there were some "dead" areas), and the biggest advantage of this was that I was able to get a "bird's eye" view of POIs "on the fly" to know where a certain POI of interest was relative to where we were at the time.

This was something sorely missed in the 2013 trip, when we were in a given area checking out something new and were considering going somewhere else and didn't know that Sam's Throne and the cafe (I was hungry) were not so far away. Not knowing, we just returned to the cabin. That sort of thing went much better this time, with me having a custom Google "My Maps" map set up for POIs of the area.  (You can click here {http://tinyurl.com/q4lwkus} to see it.)

Spots We Visited (note to self: here is how I created this table)

Spots Visited This Year

Day 1, Friday 07-31-2015  (top) (just the photos)

  • Early departure for Hardee's breakfast in Prescott ARK
  • Supplies in Russellville
  • Settled in
  • Bradley Park
  • Ponca Access Bridge
I intended for us to get an earlier start than usual. However, tradition had always been that we'd stop in Atlanta TX at Texas BBQ, but an early departure would mean this would not happen. This was rectified by noticing that there was a Hardee's in Prescott ARK in the direct path of our trip, about 2½ hours inward. This scenario had me determined to get us out of town in time to make it for breakfast.

We did in fact manage to do this, leaving right around 7 a.m. This was made possible by me packing during the day in the new "good" car the day before we were due to leave, vs trying to do much of this on departure day. This year we took a new car we had just purchased, a 2004 Saturn Ion. We still had the same 2002 Saturn SL1 we'd owned for the past 3 years but its A/C had stopped working and we couldn't face the prospect of riding that far in a hot car. We had to stop for gas not long afterwards, but did so quickly and easily managed to get to Hardee's in time for breakfast. I ordered 18 cinnamon raisin biscuits (ha ha) and the usual steak-egg biscuit.

An inactive ZTE Whirl 2 phone, $9, served as an MP3 player for road music

My ZTE Maven smartphone & Garmin Nuvi 40 (mostly my phone) provided the navigation

The kids sure looked forward to those biscuits too

We're both crazy about those biscuits, ha ha

We headed on from there. Along the way I had my eyes on a couple of smartphone possibilities in upcoming Little Rock ARK (a ZTE Grand X Max +, which I'd owned previously, especially). However, I didn't go for it, but I did go for another computer, since I only packed 1 instead of the 2 I usually pack.

From there, we stopped at the WalMart in Russellville ARK to get some supplies for food, as planned. There were a couple of swim spots on the way to Jasper (Longpool p 38 especially) which I was tempted to stop at, but we headed on, arriving at our cabin right at 3 p.m., much earlier than in years past.

We've arrived! (About 3 p.m.) We upgraded to the larger cabin #18 this year.

The kids loved having an upstairs place to sleep

A funny thing Helen said:

Interior of Cabin #18

After unpacking, we immediately went to Bradley Park. I enjoyed a cool-off dip quickly, and got some shots of the scenery, none of which satisfied me. While there my wife took some photos of the the kids, and this one dog was there that just "hung around" as it were, and my kids enjoyed it.

It was a very nice & gentle dog

After this, we immediately went to Ponca Bridge. We were initially disappointed to see that the water levels were lower than at any prior time we'd been there, but in fact its conditions were still plenty great for enjoyment, perhaps more so since the current wasn't to the level of one having to constantly fight it.

Naturally, I had to get some photos, both "fun" and scenic.

Day 2, Saturday 08-01-2015 (top) (just the photos)

  • Kids in sandbox/pool
  • Breakfast at Sharon K's Cafe
  • Hasty Campground (p84)
  • Blue Hole (p 86)
  • Carver
  • Triple Falls (failure, roads rough)
  • Ate at Taco Loco in town (high, expensive, disappointing, still hungry)
  • Ponca Access (again)
  • Cooked German Spaghetti sauce at cabin

We started off slow, just letting the kids enjoy the 5 ft pool with a waterslide our cabin offers. They also played in the sandbox, and some of the younger children of the cabin owners came out and played with them after observing them for awhile. It was the cutest thing!

The cabin owner's kids were curious about our kids, it was so cute

I had meant to make homemade "breakfast Jacks" (in other words ham/egg/cheese sandwiches on a hamburger bun, named after those items sold at Jack in the Box) but didn't get to it, we thus ate at Sharon K's Cafe in town right down the road.

After breakfast, we headed on to Hasty Campground, found on p 84 of the book (GPS Coordinates: 36.0083, -93.0814). It was a pretty respectable spot, although it didn't look that much different from other spots such as Ozark or Pruitt.

From there we went to a gold standard from 2012--the Blue Hole, which happened to also be mentioned in the book as "Troy Eddings" on p 86 (GPS Coordinates: 35.9814, -93.057). This was perhaps my favorite spot from 2012, right there with Ponca Access, but it was closed in 2013. It was great to be back, although the 1½ mile gravel road was in really rough shape.

We were there for quite awhile, it was a great spot, just as it had been in 2012 (we really missed it in 2013). After that, we went to nearby Carver, which had landed me a great photograph in 2012 (as with Blue Hole, this was a spot we didn't make it to in 2013). We were there only 5-10 minutes, just long enough for me to take a few photos.
20150801_145924_rfl_a6000
20150801_145950_rfl_a6000

We tried to visit Triple Falls, a place mentioned in the Tim Erst waterfall book (GPS Coordinates: 36.0547, -93.2583) and recommended by the cabin owners, but the road, Camp Orr, was too rutty for me (granted, I'm hard to please in this respect). It was a stressful moment of the trip that had me on the verge of a "moment" and even required a good recovery period shortly after. I don't do well with gravely roads, unless they're REALLY smooth and REALLY short, this one was almost to the point of one wanting to use a 4 wheel drive (by my standards) and was a good 3 miles long.

We went to Taco Loco, a new place in town, not long after this to eat, we were disappointed--it came nowhere near filling us up, and cost a good deal.

After a long recovery period at the cabin (presumably with the kids playing around and me doing computer stuff), we returned to Ponca Bridge which the kids once again just loved. I didn't get any really good photos of note (I guess I was REALLY tired) but here is what I did get.

Wife Jumping Off Ponca Bridge

Day 3, Sunday 08-02-2015 (top) (just the photos)

  • Cooked Breakfast Jacks, set up pot roast
  • Indian Creek Trail (road too rutty)
  • Barn shot off 327
  • Bradley Park
  • Alum Cove
  • Ate pot roast, long rest
  • Whiteley Hole (p64)
  • Pearly Springs Hole (p66)
  • Ponca
  • Subway
I cooked "breakfast Jacks" that morning (as in, ham/egg/cheese sandwiches on hamburger buns very similar to those sold by Jack in the Box). Via the cabin owners pamphlets (I believe) we had found a spot called Indian Creek Trail, it was said to be near "Kyles Landing." I found what I believed to be it and placed it in the custom Google "My Maps," but when we got there it was the same road (Camp Orr) that I had tried out the day before & became really stressed out about, so we abandoned that.

My wife went down 327, which is a road that branches off ARK 74 (the road we were on) just to sort of "browse around." While there, I encountered an old barn (not the same one as before in 2012 & 2013), naturally I stopped for photos.

Adrian looks so funny when he sleeps, ha ha
I Set Up a Pot Roast for Later
20150802_104020_rj_b_lr5_a6000 (GPS Coordinates: 35.98971, -93.20601)

She wanted to check out Alum Cove, a spot which the cabin owners had mentioned and which I had placed on my "My Maps" for phone navigation. However, I couldn't get the exact spot or "bird's eye overview" once we headed down this road. My wife, looking at a paper map, noticed it was off the road we were on, but we still didn't know exactly where. I insisted we needed to return to town (we were only about 5-7 minutes down the road) so I could get a good enough signal to get exact directions (this spot was not one listed in the book, which gives the coordinates, and I had not jotted them down, I needed a phone connection to obtain them).

We stopped at nearby Bradley Park for a bit while doing so, this allowed me to get a good enough signal for the "My Maps" on the phone to work (and obtain the coordinates saved so her Garmin Nuvi could perform the navigation if necessary) and to get some better shots of Bradley than I had gotten on Day 1.

From there, my phone was able to get a signal and thus I was able to pull up my "My Maps" and thus the Alum Cove spot (GPS Coordinates 35.85837, -93.23402) my wife was interested in. (While there I also jotted down the GPS coordinates so if the signal/directions became lost I could still get there via the Garmin Nuvi 40.) We headed on.

This spot helped out a lot in terms of "scenic hikes/walks/photos" in lieu of Lost Valley, which we normally go to but could not this year as it was closed. It didn't produce a gold mine of good shots, but it was a nice walk and experience just the same.

I got some good shots of Adrian, such as this one

One of the main things we came across, this was about 30 ft deep I'd say

After bearing left on a path just before this bridge, we started seeing this

We then arrived at the small little cave there, and hung around there a bit, acting silly, appreciating the scenery, and trying to get good photos of it.

I got a funny video of me pretending to be a bear in the cave, it starts getting funny around 0:15 and is about 1:20 long total.

On the way out, going down ARK 7 south back into Jasper, I did grab a couple of "scenic outlook" shots from one of those pull-over spots.

20150802_143031_rfl_a5000

The funny thing about trips, and this one was no different--they refresh you, excite you, and exhaust you at the same time. This particular excursion, for whatever reason, was exhausting, even though the hike wasn't particularly strenuous (probably 15 minutes from car to cave, on easy paths) yet we left quite tired and hungry, despite it not being a hard hike and despite it not being as hot here as back home (92 vs 100, roughly). Thus, we went back to the cabin and rested awhile, eating the pot roast I'd set up earlier.

After recuperating, we checked out "Whiteley Hole" (p 64 in book). This was a spot near the same area as Ponca, one we hadn't been to previously. I figured that we could hit up Ponca on the way back (which we did). The book did warn that if water levels were low, and they were, that you could be disappointed, and I was. The wife liked it quite a bit, though, and I think it would still be a good spot in other years when the water levels are higher.

On the way in, I came across the "old barn" from 2012 and 2013, naturally since it's right off ARK 74 on the way to our excursions, I had to make another attempt at recreating the legend of 2012.

20150802_174109_rj_b_lr5_a6000 (GPS Coordinates: 36.009613, -93.300466)

Now, shots of Whiteley Hole:

20150802_182535_rfl_a5000
I wasn't much excited about the shots I was getting, but there was an old barn near the entrance; at the time, there wasn't any real shots of it to be had, to my eyes. However, on the way back, with the sun setting behind a tree, it set up a great shot, one which I did as a "quick grab" with my Sony A5000 & 16-50 PZ (the "pocket rocket" camera of the trip). This may be the signature shot, the best one, of this trip.

20150802_191238_rj_b_lr5_a5000

There was also another spot in the area, Pearly Spring Hole (p 66), so we checked it out as well. It also, wasn't much--to me (again, low water levels), and it may have been a private spot, although it was listed in the book. However, my children were climbing into a parked canoe (a sign this may have been private property) and my wife got some shots of them in there.

I tried anyway. (Pearly Spring Hole)

Since Ponca Access Bridge was right there (kind of the point of checking out spots in that area), we couldn't help but stop and enjoy it once again (it turned out to be the last time we went on this trip, surprisingly).

Day 4, Monday 08-03-2015 (top) (just the photos)

  • Cooked smoked sausage, eggs & toast
  • Ozark Campground
  • Pruitt (Lower, Upper)
  • Mouth of Wells (p82) didn't work out (path was blocked last 1/2 mile)
  • Sam's Throne
  • hamburger steak/gravy with green/baked beans & collards (set up earlier)
  • Bradley Park

I started off the morning cooking a big breakfast of smoked sausage (got some for cheap, 89 cents, at the local grocery the night before), eggs and toast. For eating later, I also set up the slow-cooker based hamburger steak with gravy meal I'd only recently learned how to make (also had green beans & baked beans in the small 2-element slow cooker I also bought along).

My wife was wanting to check out some of the more far away spots, which were 1-1½ hours away (pages 88-104 in the book, roughly), and while the kids fooled around in the pool I "Wi-Fi'ed" nearby, adding many of these spots to the custom "My Maps" for pushing to the phone. She especially wanted to check out "Buffalo Point" (p 110, GPS Coordinates 36.0738, -92.556) and that actually seemed like a good spot, but as it was 1½ hours away I didn't want to do that.

We ended up getting a late start to the day (basically lolly-gagging around with me not wanting to go to spots far away), ultimately going to the local "Ozark Campground" (p 76) which was in fact one of the spots I'd found back in 2012 on swimmingholes.org/ar.html and had been one of the main points of interests which lead to us choosing Jasper back in 2012 to start with. The highlight was probably Helen jumping off one of the spots (although for once I was nervous, as 2 locals who were there briefly mumbled something about seeing a water moccasin).

We then went on to Pruitt (Lower), also close-by and a past favorite of mine and also one of the main ones I first came across in researching the area back in 2012. Due to lower water levels, I was somewhat disappointed with it in terms of water depth, but it was an enjoyable experience overall just the same.

(Note: the spot where we parked in 2012, which had the awkward hike downward but would allow someone like Bryan to enjoy the high jumps, has coordinates of 36.062024, -93.137267)

We also spent a few minutes at Pruitt (Upper) (the one closer to where you park), which normally is the less desirable of the two for me, but surprisingly this year its water level was a bit higher than Lower and thus I enjoyed it more.

(20150803_160103_rfl_a5000)

After our time here, in the spirit of my wife wanting to go to some of the other not yet seen spots derived from the book, we decided to try out Mouth of Wells (p 82, GPS Coordinates 36.0233333, -93.101944). However, either owing to the GPS directions not being the best or due to possible changes in the status of the area since the book was written (at this time I don't know which or what etc), the path was blocked off the past ½ mile and we had to turn back.

We were then going to eat at Eagle Rock Cafe (GPS Coordinates 35.92208, -93.06006), which we had eaten at in 2012 but not in 2013, but when we went there it was closed (it's closed on Mondays). We headed on to Sam's Throne to get some "overlook" shots, which I'd planned on after eating and which we also didn't do in 2013 as we had in 2012.

This excursion was not as pleasant as when we went there in 2012, because owing to changes in the vegetation growth or tiredness (or both) I didn't get as good shots as before. Also, we became separated from Adrian and also became lost ourselves, thus having us worried that Adrian could be anywhere in that whole entire place; fortunately he was in the car, he had found his way back just fine. Still, the scare took a lot out of us, and we were tired anyway. I still did get some shots while there, however. (Note for next time: don't go on a Monday, that way you won't go in as tired and hungry.)

Another attempt at a good shot

After this, especially since we hadn't been able to eat at Eagle Rock Cafe, we went back to the cabin where hamburger steak with gravy, baked beans and green beans were waiting for us in the 2 slow cookers. I also was able to quickly heat up a pot of collards, which all of us (except Jenifer) really like. I had even remembered to bring the hot vinegar sauce I always put on my collards.
Even remembered the pepper sauce, clove oil was for my tooth
which was giving me problems at that time
Mmm mmm good!
It was during such "down" times that I offloaded
the photos onto USB flash drives

From there, after getting some supplies at the local stores, I enjoyed a dip at Bradley Park (which is like 5 minutes from the cabin) while the kids and wife/mother played in the playground.

Day 5, Tuesday 08-04-2015 (top)  (just the photos)

  • Wife cooked breakfast
  • Was going to go to Robertson (p94) went instead to Shine Eye (p104), good spot except for low water & HUGE amount of canoers once I found a spot off to the left
  • Found Mexican place in Marshall via Garmin Nuvi 40
  • Tyler Bend
  • Found Grinder's Ferry "on the fly" (another link: http://tinyurl.com/nwoy32s) great swimming spot
  • Cabin, kids pool
  • Packed, Groceries at Hahn's, gassed up

(Grinder's Ferry; Park: 35.98493,-92.74401; Spot: 35.9859, -92.74293)

The last full day in Jasper ARK, we were determined to go to at least some of the more far away spots my wife was interested in (found in the book around pages 88-104). The Buffalo Point spot was simply too far for me to be able to deal with (3 hours in the car round trip, come on now), but some of the other spots which were closer (about 2 hours in the car round-trip total) were feasible. I got myself psyched up that we'd go for it, leaving early in the morning.

There was a bit of sweet activity going on prior to that, however.

To help get going quicker, the wife prepared breakfast herself while I did my usual "Wi-Fi'ing" by the pool (I usually had to do both), plugging many of the spots from that page range into the custom Google "My Maps" I'd set up so they'd push to the phone and we'd have an "overview" of what was going on.

This proved to be crucial: I initially set our sights on Robertson (p94) but as we got closer it appeared the route was very round-about, we were ultimately going away from it and would have to "double back" to get there. I looked around and saw that Shine Eye (p 104) seemed to be a bit closer, and it was, so we went there instead.

It was a nice spot overall, although the area you first come across wasn't deep enough for me, but I figure it's deeper most years (this seemed to be a low-water level year). I did go left of the entrance about 10 minutes inward, and found a good spot, but became irritated when canoe traffic became crazy. Typically none of the spots we check out have canoe traffic at a level high enough to get on my nerves, but it did so here, especially once I was in that remote spot; I wanted some seclusion.

The entry in the book, p 94. The handwriting is where,
using an app on the phone, I converted the GPS coordinates, which
were in degrees/minutes/seconds format,
to the "decimal degrees" format

It wasn't deep enough for me, only because water levels were low,
during other years, I imagine it's plenty deep enough

The kids (and my wife) enjoyed this spot quite a bit, as you can see.

What adventurous kids, they climbed up there
to check out that cave area
Our kids played with some other kids already there

The spot where I was satisfied with the water depth, at least when the canoers
stopped coming by every 2.5 milliseconds. Its GPS coordinates were
something like 35.991308, -92.741440 (bare left from the entrance,
about 10 minutes from there)

After finishing here, we intended to check out some of the other spots nearby (many of the spots we found were "clustered" close-by in this area), but hunger pains started getting the best of me (especially). Our funds by now were somewhat limited, enough that I figured we'd have to eat our old economical standby of chicken noodles & chunks back at the cabin. However, when my wife pulled up a nearby Mexican restaurant on her GPS, I really wanted to try and squeeze it in. The prices on the menu seemed within our reach, so we went ahead and ate there, enjoying a nice meal.

I had the taco salad (chicken)
We got them a chicken nuggets meal for them to split,
it actually turned out to be enough to fill them up

We then stopped at nearby Tyler Bend (p 102) which is supposedly one of the more popular spots. It didn't make that much of an impression on me, although maybe it was a spot that in other years with higher water levels I'd find myself enjoying.

From there, my wife found an "on the fly spot" we knew nothing about, Grinder's Ferry (which I later found more on at http://tinyurl.com/nwoy32s) which turned out to be a great swimming spot. It didn't look like anything from the main road, and I didn't want to bother, but she did--and she was right. One spot especially had a WONDERFULLY deep swimming area, probably 15-20 feet I'm guessing (and, as I like it, it got deep very shortly from the edge of the shore). I made a point to mark this spot down for saving, using GPS Status on my smartphone (a ZTE Maven at this time) and saving it in the notes (ColorNote). (The only thing was that the particular spot I found had a bit of a current, and this was a low year, so I'd surmise that on more "typical" years the current might be almost too strong.)

This would basically be the last spot we'd visit (except for Ft Douglas on the way home), from there we returned to the cabins to settle down, eat, and pack up for leaving for home tomorrow. We didn't return back exactly the same way, as the one road (one that was near Hasty Campground) had construction on it on the way in, and we didn't want to relive that encounter, so I had it re-route to where we went down ARK 123 (and right by the Blue Hole again) and zipped down ARK 74 South--4 minutes longer according to the GPS, but not so in this case due to the construction. I came across this barn on ARK 74 (I need to work this shot sometime) and saved its coordinates.

Kids in Pool (Pentax K-x)

Day 6, Wednesday 08-04-2015 (top)  (just the photos)

  • Departed Jasper ARK
  • Went to Ft Douglas Highway 123 (p 36)
  • Hardee's in Russellville ARK
  • Wright Patman Lake (spot outside Texarkana TX I'd marked on past trips)

It was time to head on home. We had packed up most of our items the night before, so little was left to do in that regard. We didn't cook any breakfast as we'd be eating lunch at Hardee's in Russellville ARK later anyway.

Before doing so, I had to get a few shots of the place (and I also took a "goodbye" video clip, which I'll show at the end of this posting).

Its quality is terrible, but I'm still glad I took it

One from the rear

We checked out other cabins, and the #1 cabin is where I think we'll stay next year. It is a bit larger inside, has more A/Cs (ours was a bit "marginal" with being cool enough, especially where the kids slept upstairs), and is closer to the pool where the Wi-Fi is based which means I wouldn't have to "pack up" anytime I wanted to do Wi-Fi stuff, I could simply do it right inside the cabin or in the large covered picnic area it also has.

Where I think we'll stay next year, cabin #1. Out of view on the right--the covered picnic area,
which would be great for "Wi-Fi'ing" without having to go quite so far each time. Also
as it's right by the pool, we could see the kids more readily if need be

I was tired and ready to head on, and was thus resistant to an idea my wife had--taking photos at that "Little Buffalo River" spot near that gas station where you cross the bridge. However, I relented, and I'm glad I did--we got some pretty good shots (although we'd gotten better ones had I had more energy and tried harder, I merely used the "kit" 18-55 on the A5000 vs using the 50mm 1.8 OSS I always use for portraits).

Might be a good shot if I played around with it {20150805_092010_rfl_a5000}

In the realm of "the spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak," I wanted us to enjoy Ponca Access one more time, but it's out of the way for going home, and there were a few spots of interest in-between Jasper and Russellvile which were potentially interesting. I decided to try out Fort Douglas 123 (p 36) for a quick dip and for what would be the last Jasper ARK type of visit.

Ft Douglas 123 (GPS Coordinates: 35.677209, -93.234753)

The water near where we parked wasn't deep enough, but I went walking down the path on the left and it eventually lead to a small path near the water, with 2 boulders across the way, and a 3rd closer one that appeared to have some of rope for one to climb up onto that boulder for diving. I correctly guessed that spot to be a deeper one and that is where I enjoyed the water.

The spot where I entered, the one rock, with the branch leaning against it and which
looks as if it's pointing at something, is where one can apparently jump into the water if they
can manage to get on top of that. (GPS Coordinates: 35.677029, -93.234665)
Another view
For some bizarre reason, Jenifer & Helen both wanted to keep this turtle shell

Hardee's in Russellville ARK

On this occasion anyway, this spot wasn't that great, it was OK but not that memorable (again, it may have been due to lower water conditions, apparently this one trail off to the right vs the left may offer something scenic). Other spots I had considered, and may do next time, include Longpool (p 38) and Bayou Bluff (p 42).

From there, we headed on to the Hardee's in Russeville ARK for lunch, as usual we got the $5 bag deals which include sandwich, fries, drink, and apple turnover. I also bought 4 extra apple turnovers on the side.

One pleasant surprise--while there, upon leaving, it started raining. I actually was enjoying it. Back home it was 100 or 102 or so everyday, and as weird as it is to hear me say this, we were NEEDING rain and badly. Part of what made Jasper ARK so enjoyable was that it wasn't so HOT--it was decidedly warm weather but not HOT, exactly as I like it. East TX was WAY too hot during this time.

As we were entering Texas in Texarkana, I happened across a spot I had saved from before (I think it was in the wife's GPS, I forget) which I had wanted to check out, but didn't. It was simply a swimming river or lake type of spot. My wife wanted to go on home, and actually I did too, but I also wanted to check this out this time vs skipping it once again. It turns out this spot was a common swimming/fishing spot called Wright Patman Lake, and in fact I think we had happened upon this spot in 2009 during a very different Arkansas trip to Ashdown which had largely been disappointing.

Wright Patham Lake, boat ramp--I jumped in there
(GPS Coordinates: 33.305273, -94.152243)

Down to the right was this "spillway" which looked enticing, I wanted to jump in it. I couldn't find my way to it, and I tried, coming across a "spillway" park nearby that nonetheless wasn't it.

You can see the spillway which was there, I wanted to jump in there but
couldn't find my way to it. (Estimated GPS Coordinates: 33.304500, -94.158610)
Apparently while I was in the water our kids were interested in this
guy's fishing and decided to check out what he was doing, and
Jenifer took a photo (I wish I'd also taken one and perhaps
kept this guy's info so a copy could've been sent to him)
This is the "spillway park" I came across trying to find the spillway I'd seen before.
It wasn't it, and the water level was very low, but in the future it might amount
to something. (GPS Coordinates: 33.300862, -94.157747)

(GPS Coordinates of the dam according to Wikipedia: 33.304722, -94.16)

Well, that's it. Goodbye until next year (when we hope to see Kevin there as well).
